EDP Headquarters Facade Lighting | Lisbon Riverside Landmark Illumination
Lisbon, Portugal | Corporate Headquarters Facade Illumination | DMX512 RGBW LED System | CE Certified · IP67
Project Overview
EDP (Energias de Portugal) is one of Europe’s largest energy companies. Its Lisbon headquarters occupies a prominent position on the Tagus River waterfront — one of Portugal’s highest-visibility corporate addresses. The building’s defining architectural element is a continuous rhythm of vertical aluminium slats: a facade language that creates strong depth and texture in daylight, but collapses into a flat, undifferentiated surface at night without purposeful illumination.
TPK Lighting was engaged to deliver an illumination system that preserves and amplifies the vertical slat texture at night, while enabling dynamic colour programming for corporate events and public occasions. All fixtures are CE-certified, meeting the compliance requirements for permanent outdoor installation across the European market.
Key Challenges & TPK Solutions
Revealing Architecture Through Light — The Engineering Problem
Preserving Vertical Texture at Night
The vertical slat facade creates compelling depth in daylight through light-and-shadow interplay. Standard wide-beam illumination floods this texture flat, erasing the architectural detail the building’s identity depends on.
Grazing-Angle Beam Engineering
The LWW-WZB-W55’s asymmetric beam — narrow horizontal, wide vertical — is deployed at close mounting distance (0.8–1.2m), casting shadow depth into each slat recess. Architectural texture is preserved and amplified rather than suppressed.
Glare Control in a Riverside Public Zone
The Tagus waterfront is a major pedestrian promenade. Upward light scatter or off-axis fixture glare would degrade the public environment and potentially conflict with Portugal’s outdoor lighting regulations.
Secondary Frosted Lens Optics
The LWW-WZB-W55 optical assembly includes a secondary frosted diffuser over the RGBW LED array, eliminating direct source visibility from off-axis viewing angles. All output is confined to the intended facade surface.
CE Compliance for European Installation
Permanent outdoor LED installations in Europe require CE marking under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. Non-compliant fixtures cannot be lawfully installed in EU member states.
Full CE + RoHS Certification
All LWW-WZB-W55 fixtures carry full CE marking and RoHS compliance, satisfying European regulatory requirements for permanent outdoor installation in Portugal and across all EU markets.
Core Focus
Corporate Identity Meets Riverside Landmark
The EDP headquarters lighting system operates in two distinct modes: a refined, high-CRI warm-white mode (3000K, CRI ≥80) for standard corporate identity operations, and a full RGBW dynamic colour mode for event programming. Both modes are managed from the same DMX512 control network with no hardware changes required.
- Texture-preserving illumination — grazing-angle deployment reveals rather than flattens the vertical slat depth at night.
- Dual-mode operation — warm-white corporate mode and full RGBW event mode from a single control system.
- Glare-free riverside presence — verified output containment from the Tagus waterfront promenade viewing axis.
- CE-compliant European specification — all fixtures meet LVD and EMC Directive requirements for permanent EU outdoor installation.

Dual-Mode Control
The TPK LWW-WZB-W55 installation at EDP Lisbon demonstrates a fundamental principle of high-quality architectural facade lighting: illumination that serves the building’s architecture rather than overriding it. By preserving the vertical slat texture that defines the building’s daytime identity, the nighttime facade reinforces rather than contradicts the architect’s original design intent — while enabling the programmable event identity that a global corporate headquarters requires.
